There are multiple users in the regional offices who are setup to
access their email over the internet via Outlook Web Access (OWA) and
from their phone using Exchange Active Sync (EAS). Their email server
is located in regional office but they point to a front end email
server at the corporate office for remote access.
The regional offices and stores currently do not have their own direct
internet connection. Instead they point back to our ISA server at the
corporate office. We are currently working on setting up the regional
offices to have their own internet connection but have started having
trouble with remote email access.
In the three regions we have converted the users are complaining that
it takes an inordinate mount of time to get logged into their email
and to open attachments (generally Word and Excel files). There are
no problems with users accessing the internet through the new ISA
Server and all other connections appear to function normally. All
servers and PCs have been rebooted multiple times.
□ The Domain Controller at the Corporate office (CORP1) is running
Windows Server Standard 20003 – SP2.
□ The Email Server at the Corporate office (CORP2) is running Windows
Server Standard 20003 – SP2 and Exchange Server 2003 – SP2.
□ The ISA Server at the Corporate office (CORP3) is running Windows
Server Standard 20003 – SP2 and ISA Server 2004.
□ The Front End Email Server at the Corporate office (CORP4) is
running Windows Server Standard 20003 and Exchange Server 2003 – SP2.
□ The Domain Controllers in the Regional Office (AREA1) are running
Server Standard 20003 – SP2, Exchange Server 2003 – SP2 and now ISA
Server 2006 – SP1
AREA1 has two network cards, one connected to the internal network and
one connected directly to the internet via the cable modem using
static IP Addresses. The default gateway on the internal connection
is not setup in the network properties but was setup with the route
add command. We have also used the route add command to setup a route
to all of the stores on the WAN as well as the corporate office.
This is very confusing because we did not make any changes to any of
the corporate office servers. The ISA Server should only come into
play when users want to go out to the internet. OWA and EAS requests
are sent to the corporate office and then connected to the regional
office. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Generally, rebooting the server or stopping and starting the email
store will correct this problem for a few days. Nothing has changed
on the PCs at the stores, which are running Windows 2000 - SP4 and
Office 2000.
