IE 6 "The page cannot be displayed"

I am using XP Professional and IE 6.0.2600 and have never had any problen
connecting to the internet. Today, out of the blue, it has stopped opening
any web page at all ("The page cannot be displayed"). My internet connection
on the desktop in question is excellent and my laptop wireless connection
(from the same router) is working perfectly. I'm a newbie here and would
really appreciate any help.
