Hello All, (W7 - 64 B)

On 1/22 I was accessing my classrooms (two different colleges)... it was
working fine up until I received an update for IE8 and W7. I have set my
IE8 to default on all zones, have worked with Tech support from both
colleges... they state it has to be an IE8 or W7 issue. So , that it where
I found an update for IE8 and W7 around the time that I started having the
problem. Let me explain.

I log in and it kicks me back to the log in screen... once in a while I can
get into the classroom at one college. However, the other college... I can
get access after two or three attempts, then when I get into the classroom
and click on the discussion room, it will kick me back to the log in screen.

Yes, I have tried different browsers.... Yesterday Firefox was working in
both... now both browsers are not working.... any advice? I have checked
for malware, and viruses... none found... Please assist.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

See the "How to obtain help" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978207

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
and/or 1-866-234-6020 in the United States and in Canada or by contacting
your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that
are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that
your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number
(e.g., KB978207).

If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE (e.g.,
KB978207), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer
IE queue" (which is 47830).

Or you can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

Consumer Security Support home page includes links for free security update
support, too
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

My antivirus is up to date and I have other anti spyware but have had them
since the inception of my computer... and thank you for posting your advice
again but I had already read that and tried it..... before I posted for
help.... because when you call the number... besides answering 15 questions
and letting them know you have tried all that.... they tell you that they do
not have weekend help and someone will have to call you back....

So... I posted here... Any other suggestions?

I asked some very specific questions yet the bulk of them remain unanswered.

Email support for issues related to security updates (e.g., KB978207) is
available 24/7.

Did you upgrade to Win7 64-bit or is it a brand-new computer?

The fact that you're seeing the behavior in Firefox as well as IE suggests
that having installed KB978207 has nothing to do with the problem. That
being said, does the problem persist after uninstalling KB978207?

It is a brand new computer, and yes, the problem exists after uninstalling
kb978207. No trial version of Norton is on this computer. I understand
about Firefox, and yes I considered that since Firefox updated as well when
I started using it after I started having the issue with IE8. This led me to
think that maybe the colleges had not been updated to be compatible with the
new versions of both.... but the tech support people at both colleges say
that is not the problem... this is what led me to this newsgroup...

For the life of me, I can not see how both would not work.... I downloaded
chrome... and it is working fine. This again leads me to believe that it is
a compatibility issue with the newest version of IE8 and Firefox. So... I
then went back to previous versions of both.... and it still did not work...
Now I am perplexed and was hoping for a solution from any of you.... and
Microsoft has been no help at all...

There is not an "earlier version of IE8" for Win7. And if uninstalling
KB978207 didn't resolve the problem, it has nothing to do with an "IE8
update."

If you also refuse to tell MS Support what anti-virus and anti-spyware
applications are installed, good luck.

Given the weirdness of phoenix.edu software (which for 2-3 years had
students posting their homework in OE6 newsgroup), anything's possible.

I'll give you 2 more options: Get your hands on a WinXP computer running IE6
or IE7 or start looking for a new job.

Though I appreciate your help... I do not appreciate your sarcastic remarks.
I did not refuse to tell what antivirus or antispyware program I am
using.... but you are also not dealing with a novice... I have disabled
them, implemented Windows firewall and started from scratch... and I was
talking about earlier without any updates... I already am using my other
computers... all 4 of them are working fine... Do you really think that I
would not have another avenue to teach? It just would be nice to use my new
computer...

And... if all you can do is be critical with everyone... then I will look
elsewhere for the answer... Thanks anyway...

I do not work for or represent Microsoft: I am a volunteer here, just like
everyone else. I'm not your student and you have been anything but
cooperative.

PS: Bite me!

I realize that you do not work for or represent Microsoft... because an
employee would have been fired by now and a volunteer is usually doing the
work because they enjoy it.... not to degrade others. Please stop with the
offending remarks... no one in this newsgroup or others appreciates your
behavior. As far as my cooperation, it would be nice to know why you ask
something... and it would be nice if you could be a little more forthcoming
on your advice so that the person asking can get the answer in one post
instead of the "20 question routine".... and several visits later...

I had the same problem under the same conditions. UoP Tech support had me install firefox but I found a work around. First aclick on help the about internet explorer. If you are using IE 8 with 256 bit cipher strenght, you have to go to tools and click on "in private browsing" each time you want to access the UoP website. Works for me.
