Mac Performa 6360, OS 8.5.1, 88 MB of RAM, Outlook Express 5.0

While backing up some files to a Zip cartridge I moved a folder called
"Microsoft User Data" from one folder to another on my hard drive. Now
when I start Outlook Express all my accounts, all my rules, and all my
preferences are gone. All my mail boxes are there, all my old messages
are listed, but when I try to open them I get the error message "The
action could not be completed. An unknown error (4362) occurred."

I tried moving "Microsoft User Data" back where it originally was but
that didn't help. In fact, I now seem to have two of those folders in
different locations on my hard drive, and I can't tell which is newer
and which is older from the date on the folder. It's the same on both
of them.

I thought I would just set up my accounts and rules again, but that
didn't get me access to all my old messages, which I'd really like to
have.

Any ideas?

Open OE, then check the modification date on both MUD folders. The one that
was just modified is the newer empty one. Delete it and replace it with your
original one.

Also, check the size of the "Microsoft User Data/Identities/<Your Identity
Name Here>/messages" file. The larger messages file SHOULD be the one
containing all you old messages.

You'll need that messages file along with the associated database and
database cache files for OE to recognize and re-order our messages.
