Since I had an appointment with my ophthalmologist yesterday, I took my
laptop with me and showed him the color scheme. He said that the
contrast was poor indeed, and that very few of his older patients would
be likely to read the text either. He then said that his professional
medical software used a highly readable color scheme and that he was glad
of it as he could only read the text from IE8 with difficulty.
Forgive my language but WHY THE HELL does Microsoft insist on sticking
with this unreadable color scheme? Did they hire a Feng Shui designer to
choose the colors? [See:
http://fengshui.about.com/od/fengshuicures/qt/fengshuicolor.htm or
http://www.thespiritualfengshui.com/feng-shui-color.php] Or did a stupid
manager choose the colors at random? In either case, a very large number
of complaints have been sent to Microsoft. However, Microsoft will not
back down on this color scheme. This lends credence to the stupid
manager with a big ego hypothesis.
In my case, I will stick to Outlook, Windows Mail (Outlook Express) and
Internet Explored 7. I was fortunate that the update had a way to easily
revert back to the older software. What I fear most is that the
successor to Vista will incorporate this poor color scheme. I use the
Classic Windows color scheme now; it is easy to read and I have
considerable control over how it looks.
If Microsoft is unwilling to provide a more-readable color scheme in
future products, they have lost me as a customer. I think they will lose
many more for the same reason. While I have a large amount of
engineering software that runs in a Windows environment and is expensive
to replace, I will have to go to Linux. If the screens are unreadable,
what good is this expensive software?
If you agree with me, express your feelings to Microsoft - loudly! If
Microsoft worries about losing their customer base, they will listen.
Perhaps Microsoft should understand the meaning of the color gray in Feng
Shui since they use this color for most text rather than high contrast
black.
"Gray (Yin) - Gray is neither black nor white, it is the Feng Shui
color of dead and dull;
indefinite." *
