Last night I updated my Norton Antivirus. My email was
working fine until I turned the computer off and re-
started it this morning. When I opened Outlook Express I
could not recieve any email. I called Comcast and they
told me my settings had been changed by updating Norton
antivirus and had me correct my settings. I was then able
to recieve email. But, shortly after that while in
Outlook Express my computer froze and I had to push the
power button to turn my computer off, then on again. Now
whenever I open up Outlook Express and am in it a minute
or so, my computer freezes. It doesn't freeze while I am
in Safe Mode. I have Windows 98. I have been on the
phone with Gateway and Comcast all morning and nothing
they do solves the problem. Comcast is advising me to go
to Internet Explorer Repair in my computer but told me
that all of my email that I've saved will be erased so I'd
rather not do that if I can avoid it since I have a lot of
saved email. Is there anything else that I might be able
to do to solve this problem?

The IE repair does not erase any mail.

But it's always a good idea to backup anything you consider of value.

Since things work OK in Safe mode, that suggests that something getting loaded normally at boot
time (Norton comes to mind) is causing the problem. If something were wrong with OE, you'd
likely also have the problem in safe mode.

Thank you for responding to my question. I need to
clarify, if I go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
Explorer and Tools, Outlook Express and Repair, that the
emails that are currently in my Outlook Express will not
be erased? The Comcast technician who suggested that I do
that told me that they would be. I haven't done it yet,
and from what you are saying, perhaps I don't need to.
If it's Norton causing the problem, how do I correct that?

I will go to the website mentioned and learn how to back
up my emails.
Thanks for your help.

it will not remove your e-mail messages.

All repair does is reload DLL files.

Even if you completely uninstall OE and then reinstall it, the old mail is not deleted. The
worse that can happen is that OE will start using new folders and you will have to manually
import your old mail.

But it's still a good idea to backup your data before doing any serious install or uninstall.

As for Norton, I'd try going into its settings and telling it not to scan e-mail and see if
that makes any difference.
