Java Help with installation

I am trying to install Java runtime environment on my computer (running
Vista Home Premium). I gat as far as the downloading installer windows. When
that has finished, it disapears without leaving a trace and with no files
saved to the computer, no error messages, absolutely no nothing.
Can anyone help me here please.
I have run the windows installer clean up utility and there are no previous
versions of java on my computer.
