dropdown depending on second dropdown / filter problem

Hi,
i have got following problem. I have two dropdown fields, linked to an xml input.
When i first choose an entry from the first dropdown the filter applies to the second dropdown correctly and only shows the related results in selection list.
But when i then change the first dropdown again and choose a different value, somthing wrong happens.
The second dropdown now shows me my last selection from the previous filter and additionally the newly filtered values.
What i would have expected is, that the second dropdown would be cleared completely, before the newly filtered values are added to the selection list.
How can i achieve that?? Perhaps with an extra rule??
