I have installed IIS on XP pro as per instructions I have seen repeated in
several locations on the web.

However although it is installed as a service and has automatically started,
I don't get the expected response when running the "Start>Run" routine
http://localhost"

I get a "this page cannot be displayed" response.

I appear to have overlooked something. One complicating factor could be
that I have Apache installed on the system as well. However it is installed
as a service which is not running when I attempt to use IIS.

This is my first time installing IIS so I may have overlooked something
basic. Appreciate any suggestions.

David

Hello,

See if this helps you:

"Page Cannot be Displayed" or "Web Page Unavailable Offline" When You Browse

How about when using the IP of the server:

http://{IP_Address}/

Look at the event log and post any relevant entries. Post the error
number you receive in Internet Explorer. Check your settings for
using a proxy (Control Panel - Internet Options - Connection - LAN
Settings).

Maybe, it has something to do with the fact that apache is using port 80,
can you change apaches port, uninstall iis and re install it (this time
choosing more options) don't forget to do the latest service pack. I have
not have very many problems with iis and other servers in my system. But one
rule of thumb that I have acquired, is that I always respect iis and I make
sure that I have paved a clean road for it before I install it. It is always
good to have a second machine available, for testing purposes. Nothing gets
done on any of my production servers until I know what I am doing is going
to work. I always back up the production server (system state or otherwise)
I like being able to fall back and restore the server if something goes
wrong.

PS.: I think the IIS that comes with XP pro is very flawed, I would recomend
using Win2K server or Win2003 server.
