Actually, it is more likely a problem with your firewall, especially if you are
doing network address translation (NAT).
FTP is an odd ball protocol in that it creates two separate sessions. One on
port 21 for transmitting commands and another on port 20 to transfer the
actually file.
The problem occurs when you are transferring large files. The connection on port
21 sits idle till your firewall eventually forgets the port mapping to the legal
address. Symptoms of this problem are transferring 98-99% of a file and then
having the connection hang.
How to fix this problem depends on which firewall you are using. Sometimes it is
just a matter of tweaking the time-out value higher. I've also found that some
work better when passive FTP is used (default for Netscape and IE, also
selectable in WS_FTP). This may get you past the problem as well.
If not, let me know what you have for a firewall and I'll see if I can not get
you more info.
