IIS6 works on LAN not on Internet

Hello,

I just replaced a NT4 server with a 2003 server and the two websites I
am hosting off of it no longer work from the internet. If I am on my lan
they work fine. computers on the lan use a local dns server that maps the
website names to the lan ip address. Offsite using the internet I get a
page cannot be displayed error. The IP address for both the Internet and
lan are the same as the NT4 box. Other services, such as the e-mail server,
are working fine. I don't think it is a DNS problem. Any idea's??

a) Are you sure that the DNS names resolve on the internet?

b) You should get a more detailed error message. If you are using IE, look
down the bottom. If the DNS name cannot be resolved you'll see, if small
text, "Can not find server or DNS error". If the server can be reached, but
the server is generating an error, you will see a status code, eg "500
Internal Server Error".

Thank you for your response. I have it resolved. That is to say it is
now working, not that I fully understand what was wrong. To answer your
questions yes I am sure that the DNS names were resolving and the error
message was simply "Cannot connect".

I had configured Routing and remote access for a VPN conenction on the
server and for some reason that prevented the server from openig port 80 on
the public IP. I discovered this by using a port scanner on the public and
private addresses. I disabled routing and remote access and re-scanned and
everything showed up again. Tested from a PC outside of the LAN and
everything is working.

Hi,

Did you enable the Basic Firewall? If so, port 80 was probably not open. You
can open it manually from the RRAS configuration.

Click NAT/Basic Firewall in the left pane. Then right click the NIC in the
right pane and click Properties. Click on the "Services and Ports" tab, and
open port 80.
