Okay, I reinstalled IIS, and now I can get into Internet Service
Manager on my w2k Server.

However, everything is STOPPED. See screen shot:
http://www.torkzadeh.com/clients/misc/IIS_screenshot.gif

And when I right click and select START on any of the applications, it
waits for a while and then gives the following error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a
timely fashion

I am sure it is probably something easy. Some service that needs to be
turned on. Could someone please direct me here?

Here's the list of services on my machine and their status:

One clue in your list of Services is "True Vector Internet Monitor"

suggests that you have Zone Alarm installed ?

Thanks for your reply.

I uninstalled Zone Alarm. IIS still won't start.

There are some SERVICES in MMC that won't start. For example, when I
try to start WWW PUBLISHING SERVICE, it says:

ERROR 1717: The interface is unknown

Is that part of the problem.

This is my services as of now:

database. Started Manual LocalSystem

o.k. .. didn't need to uninstal .. but having uninstalled ZoneAlarm ..
have you now got rid of the message .. "does not respond .. in a timely
fashion"?

you have a lot of services installed ..

Norton AV might be the next suspect ..

read a thread a bit further down

2%2E1967%40nsw%2Ennrp%2Etelstra%2Enet%3E

if that doesn't work, try disabling some of your services until you have
just a core set ..

and stop/restart IIS between changes

I disabled SCRIPT BLOCKING and that didn't help.

Okay, I am going to do that. But I have no idea what constitutes "a
core set" Can you please tell me where I can get a list of a core set.

The only thing I need this server for is to test my asp pages
locally. I don't want to host any website, send any mail. Nothing more
than just test asp pages. I listened to some guy telling me IIS is
somehow worth the trouble.

Since the text version of my list of services is so difficult to read,
I made a screen shot:
http://www.torkzadeh.com/clients/misc/service_list.gif

By the way, ever since I installed win2000 server I've been getting an
error on every startup telling me that "one or more services" did not
start.

Thanks again for your help.

Frankly, I've found that it is often quicker and better to uninstal and
reinstal IIS when you get into a bind like this .. go to Add/Remove
Windows Components to remove IIS. But make sure first that you have
your CD on standby to reinstal .. and only re-instal the components you
need.

You might get a better idea from someone else ..

Famous last words!

This might be regarded as herecy on this list .. but (not knowing your
planned application) have you thought of PHP as your scripting language?
. (now I'll really get flamed).

Simple web server here offering PHP plus MySQL ..
http://foxserv.linuxmax.net/portal.php ..

Or even Apache (Windows) plus PHP ..

or chillisoft offering ASP .. http://www.chillisoft.com

but back to IIS ..

Go to Administrative Tools | Event Viewer to diagnose ..

But it isn't necessarily a serious problem.

Thanks for your reply.

I have checked and I do have both "Client for Microsoft Networks" and
a network adapter installed.

Also both RPC and RPC LOCATOR services are STARTED.

DL,

Thanks for your suggestions about different servers. I haven't got any
more money to spend. I wish I could just abandon IIS right here but
I've got so much time invested in getting everything setup. I am
hoping once I get it started, I would not have to mess with it again.

About EVENTS VIEWER. When I try to view it, I get the following error:
http://www.torkzadeh.com/clients/misc/event_viewer_error.jpg

Also when I try to start the WWW PUBLISHING SERVICE I get an ERROR
1717: The Interface is Unknown.

Finally, as you might recall I did uninstall and reinstall IIS earlier
today per your suggestion. I'll do it again because this time I had
everything that comes with it reinstalled.

Now, from the list below please tell which are the services that I
should reinstall. (keep in mind, all I want to do is test ASP pages):

common files
documentation
ftp server
frontpage extentions (I use dreamweaver, never frontpage)
iis snap-in
internet services manager (HTML)
nntp service
smtp service
visual interdec RAD remote deployment support
worldwide web server

thanks a bunch for you time,

DL,

It seems there are other servcies on this machine that won't start.

I mentioned EVENTS VIEWER and WWW PUBLISHING SERVICE.

Now I tried starting the TASK SCHEDULER and I got the following 1717
error:
http://www.torkzadeh.com/clients/misc/taskscheduler_error.jpg

I seems there is something drastically wrong. Any clues?

o.k. let's recap

(a) you have uninstalled IIS, and rebooted, and reinstalled IIS, and
rebooted .. twice .. and still get the errors? Your box is jinxed.

(b) you only want to develop and test ASP .. nothing more?
________________________________________________________________________
__

this is what I would do .. but it may not suit you .. depends on how
patient you are ..

(a) I would reinstal ZoneAlarm which you uninstalled to test if there
was a conflict.

(b) check these Services .. it seems you have been changing some ..

Alerter Disabled
Computer Browser Disabled
Distributed File System Disabled
Diskeeper Manual
Event Log Automatic
FTP Publishing service Manual
Kerberos Disabled
NAV Alert Manual
NAV Auto-Protect Automatic
Norton Program Scheduler Automatic
pcAnywhere Disabled
Performance Logs and Alerts Automatic
Remote Registry Service Disabled
Routing and Remote Access Disabled
RunAs Service Automatic
TelNet Disabled
TrueVector Internet Monitor Automatic (Zone Alarm)
Windows Media Services Disabled (all four services)

(c) Next I would clean up your registry. This may not yield results, but
it is not wasted effort. Get jv16 PowerTools from http://www.jv16.org
(free) and search for obsolete or orphaned registry entries and erase
them (but backup your registry first).

(d) after a, b, c above .. reboot.

(e) If you have got nowhere, proceed thus ..

(f) If you have uninstalled and reinstalled twice already, then skip
this and move on. Otherwise try a reinstallation of IIS.

(g) if you have enough space on your PC for a second copy of Windows
2000, then get Partition Magic from http://www.powerquest.com, and
create a second partition D:. Then instal a dual boot Win2000 OS into
say partition D. This need not cost you anything since there is a 30 day
trial of Partition Magic. [ Also whilst you are at it, create a
separate partition for your paging file . Helps in defrag. But this
latter has nothing to do with solving your current predicament. ]

(h) now boot into the fresh OS to see if you can get started and run ASP
pages. Also check the list of services in new OS (D:) with those in old
OS (C:)

(i) it is always useful anyway to have a dual boot OS, kept suitably
lean, in case you run into difficulties with your main OS in C partition
and cannot get into your files. This gives you an alternative access, so
it is not wasted effort.

________________________________

As to not having any more money to spend on other OS solutions ... the
Apache + PHP + MySQL route is free.

But if you add ASP as a mandatory requirement then the alternatives are
not free.

It appears you have OS issues, that go much deeper than IIS. I would start
there; maybe even a clean install.

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.

DL,

You're a lifesaver, dude. Thanks so much.

I went through step C (cleaning up registry) and it worked. But I
didn't try to see if it's working between step A to C, so have no idea
what was it that fixed it.

Quick question (and tell me to get lost if I am pushing my luck with
you): Why in my browser I can't get to

http://127.0.0.1/ or http://localhost/ ?

When I type in 192.168.1.3, which is the IP address assigned to the
DEFAULT WEB SITE in IIS console, I get the following--see screen shot:

http://www.torkzadeh.com/clients/misc/localstart_screenshot.jpg

I get the http://192.168.1.3/localstart.asp which tries to popup the
localhost/iishelp/ page but gives a "The page cannot be found" error.

The 192.168.1.3 is not the same IP address assigned to the machine
itself. It gets to the Internet through 192.168.1.15.

The same happens with the ADMINISTRATIVE SITE, which I've assigned
192.168.1.5. I get a "The page cannot be found" error.

I can get to other sites I created myself on IIS just fine. I assigned
them separate IP addresses and they work fine.

Thanks again for all your help.

seems you are into new territory now ..
problems serving asp

read articles/threads here .. (and throughout this forum, same localhost
problems with asp .. read further back)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q309051

http://www.developersdex.com/asp/search.asp?p=592&Search=low+protection&

simplest solution - go to your web site(s) | Home Directory |
Application Protection
and set application protection to "Low (IIS Process)"

check also in Execute Permissions you have "Scripts and Executables"

then shutdown and restart IIS using Command rompt

NET STOP IISADMIN /Y
NET START W3SVC

then try accessing test pages .. http://127.0.0.1/iisadmin/

p.s..

If you have now re-installed ZoneAlarm .. make sure that you list
"localhost" or "127.0.0.1" in your ZoneAlarm trusted zone .. go to
Security | Advanced

and finally .. in Default Web Site, make the IP address 127.0.0.1
