Hey Newsgroups,
I've been elected by my company to run the computer
network from here on out. I just recently switched our
network from a workgroup over to win 2k server, and I am
learning the old fashioned way about running this beast.
I was just wondering if anybody had some information
about setting up VPN or a server based company home page.
I've read some about it, but nothing on how to do it. I
know that we have a static IP here and DHCP and DNS are
setup with active directory. That's about as far as I
have gotten with this whole server thing. I would greatly
appreciate any referrals where I can learn to set up some
of this neat stuff. Also I know there are alot of good
things that you can do with win 2k. Anybody have any
suggestions that I can impress my boss with. Like they
say if you can't be good, find somebody who is and act
like you know what the hell is going on!!!

Thanks in advance,
Aaron M.

First thing is to stay on top of security, so no nasty viruses or worms get on your network. Get real familiar with windowsupdate, and I
would also suggest subscribing to our security notification alias found at www.microsoft.com/security

Now, you will want to learn how to manage IIS first, and you probably don't want to put this on your only w2k server running AD, since
this is where your global catalog is located. It is also recommended to run IIS on a member server. So, if you have IIS installed on this
server, and you are not currently using it for anything, such as Exchange, then I would uninstall it; setup a new member server (this
doesn't have to be a beefy box; I am sure a PC will be fine in your case). Install sp4, IIS, and windowsupate.

As far as learning to create web pages, you might try here for some pointers:
microsoft.public.frontpage.client

Thank you. I hope this information is helpful.
