I stopped IIS a few weeks ago because I wasn't using it. Now I need to work
on an asp.NET application so I tried to start the site. No luck. OK I
thought I'd just remove IIS and reinstall. Still no luck. I've been
following a few instructions found on this group:

1. Boot in safe mode.
2. Unistall IIS.
3. Delete C:\Inetpub, C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv
4. Try to rename C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys but one key (19c5cf...) is locked even
in safe mode.
5. Reboot
6. Reinstall IIS

Any ideas where to go next?
Thanks,
Richard.

Hmm... up the creek and no paddle in sight. What's in the event logs?

Not much about IIS - only

[snip]
The IIS Admin service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.
[snip]

Which isn't very helpfull. I have gone a little further since my last post
because it looks like COM+ is broken on my system.

Event log entries like this abound:

[snip]
The run-time environment has detected an inconsistency in its internal
state. This indicates a potential instability in the process that could be
caused by the custom components running in the COM+ application, the
components they make use of, or other factors. Error in
d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\comsvcs\package\cpackage.cpp(1184), hr = 8007041d:
InitEventCollector failed
[snip]

So I uninstalled IIS and tried to reinstall COM+ using the proceedure in
Q315296. That doesn't seem to have helped much since comexp.msc runs and
hides when I try to expand the computers node.

Anywhere else I can look? I'd rather understand the problem than just image
over the top of it.

Thanks,
Richard.

Well, in that case fix you com+ error first,
can you expand the component service to my computer level?

the one locked key is used by the Task Scheduler service to input
credentials. You might try and stop this service and see if it releases
it's lock on the key.

Component services vanishes when I expand the computers node. I've tried
reinstalling COM+ as described in Q315296 (registering ole32 & oleaut32
because I'm on XP pro). Still no luck. Is there anywhere I can look to see
what's happening when I expand this node? I worked on some COM+ components a
while ago so I suspect its a "registered but not present" kind of thing.
Thanks.

Similar but you can try various method in the comment methods to see if it

I'm pretty sure I've tried the solutions listed in "TFCNR". Will have to
take a deep breath and go again.

I profiled mmc.exe on the broken machine and one that works. Don't know if
this sheds any light.
A breakpoint on GetClassObject in Ole32.dll isn't hit.
Thanks for your help.

I traced a little more with windbg.
Starting after the SQLSetEnvAttr call in comsvs.dll, all seems to go OK
until CoCreateInstance fails trying to create an IEventServer2 interface.

COMSVCS.DLL
CMTSPackage::InitEventDispatcher ultimately ends up at
CEventDispatcher::GetEventServer which calls
HR = CoCreateInstance({ECABAFBC...}, 0, 0x17, {378F3CA7...}, &StackVariable)

EC... is "COM+ Event Notification Server"
37... is "IEventServer2"

HR is 8007041D - (service didn't respond in an appropriate time).

Any thoughts on where to go next?
Thanks.

Now, I don't go that deep just to get IIS started.
Can you pls uninstall IIS
a) uninstall IIS (safe or normal mode)
b) Remove files and folders
%windir%/system32/inetsvr/
/inetpub/
%windir%/iisx.log (x=5 for w2k, 6 for XP, Win03)
(use safe mode to delete)

before installation, check if component servies is working correctly, and
you can drill down to component listing level.
then resintall IIS.

any error msgs during installation?
if no, can you start IIS ? if no, anything in event log and iisX.log file?

I uninstalled IIS as you described.
I'm still unable to open the computers node in component services.
The event logs for a restart are listed at the end.

Hi Richard,

You might want to give the following steps a try also instead of the
steps in Q315296 if those didn't help.. they are similar with a few
differences. Once we get COM+ to be restored, I think IIS install would go
through...

To uninstall and reinstall all MDAC and COM+ Components on Windows 2000

==================Reboot into Safe mode================================

1. Go to command prompt and rename Clbcatq.dll with the following command:
ren %WinDir%\System32\Clbcatq.dll %WinDir%\System32\~Clbcatq.dll
Note: Make sure that you include the tilde (~) at the start of the file
name.

2. Restart the computer (back into safe mode)

3. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

4. Locate and delete the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\COM3
Leave the registry editor open for step #8

5. At a command prompt, type
"rd /s %windir%\Registration" (without the quotation marks), and then
press ENTER.
This is the location folder of the registration database.

6. Register comsvcs.dll from the command prompt with the following command
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\comsvcs.dll

7. In the registry editor, locate and delete the the value for the key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\CLBVersion

8. At a command prompt, type:
"rd /s %windir%\system32\COM" (without the quotation marks), and
then press ENTER.

==================Reboot into Normal mode================================

9. Open up the Control Panel.

10. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows
Components.

11. Do not select any checkmarks...Just click Next
This will to go through the reinstallation process and will
automatically reinstall all COM+ and MDAC components

It is very important to restart the computer before trying the Add/Remove
Windows Components option.

Unfortunately the steps WenJun lists didn't help.
I followed each step apart from #6. ComSvcs.dll depends on clbcatq.dll
which I'd just renamed so the dll failed to load.
I'm still unable to expand past computers in Component Services.
ComSetup.log is attached at the end of this post. I also noticed an iis6.log
even though IIS is not checked in Add/Remove->Windows Components.

Is there anywhere else I should look?
Thanks,
Richard.

Things are looking up. I had installed a version of the enterprise library
when doing some development a while ago. It seems this was the problem.
Uninstalling the enterprise library allows me to open the computers node in
component services. Will start working forward now to see if I can get IIS
up again. I'm surprised there's no easy way to find out what caused the
problem though.

Thanks for all your help,
Richard.
