When I start the IISAdmin service the following message appears in the
Application event log:
The IISADMIN service is not available, so virtual roots cannot be
indexed.

Status code returned is DWORD 0.

The following appears in the System Event Log
DCOM got error "An instance of the service is already running. "
attempting to start the service IISADMIN with arguments "" in order to
run the server:

I did have the Workstation option pack installed before and didn't
uninstall it before upgrading to Server. I was assuming that it could
be done after the upgrade. The option to uninstall it was missing
from Add/Remove Programs so I installed the Server Option pack to the
same locations as the Workstation pack.
I have tried uninstalling the option pack and reinstalling it a total
of 3 times so far. Each time I seem to get a little farther, but the
IISAdmin service seems to be having trouble starting. The install
takes a very long time on a Pentium II 300 w/ 128mb of Ram and the CPU
utilization goes to 100% at times while nothing appears to be happeing
with the hard drive during the install.
Is there a workaround that I can do, possibly a manual wipe of the
files and registry entries? I'm running Norton System Doctor and
Norton Antivirus Autostart as well in case either of these will cause
a problem.
Otherwise, I would format the harddisk and reinstall NT 4.0 Server (not the
workstation), SP3, and the NT Option Pack with IIS 4. And then reload the
other software.

out after a while and settles down OK. The other one:

is again a regular visitor. I assume that it's something to do with the
order that the services are started, or the machine latency (they seem
most common on slower machines with IDE disks). I find that the IISADMIN
service and the other services are all running OK once the boot sequence
has finished and the server's hard disks have finished thrashing around.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...
