Could you please help me with directions to publish an XBAP from VS 2008
Pro. Here are the basic steps I've got so far, but it isn't yet working.

1) create a virtual directory (for example called 3D) in IIS, using a
physical file path.

2) in VS under build/publish website, publish to the same physical path.

3) now I can check the physical path, where I find the XAML browser
application (called 3D). I can launch 3D and the xbap application runs
normally.

4) in IIS I try to browse the website, but it fails. I try to set the
default document to 3D.xbap but this doesn't work either.

What else is needed in order to enable IIS to serve this file?

Hi Jrl,

From your description, you're encountering some problem on deploying a XBAP
app through IIS 7 virtual directory, correct?

As you mentioned that when browing to the xbap file, it fails, what is the
error message displayed on webbrowser? Also, I suggest you first put an
simple html or other static document in that directory and try browing it
to see whether such simple static text document can be correctly displayed
in browser. This can help us confirm whether the IIS virtual directory
itself is correctly configured(and serving static content correctly).

Sincerely,

Steven Cheng

Hi,

What's the exact error message when you tried browsing to the site? Is it
404 Not Found?

Thanks.

I apologize for the delay in getting back to you.

The error message is not very informative. I have Google toolbar installed,
so the web page just says "oops! this link appears to be broken" and that
there is a DNS error - cannot find server.

To troubleshoot, I created a basic asp.net web page, on the same IIS server
using the same procedure as I did with the XBAP web site. This second (test)
site opened fine, so the suggestion that there is a DNS error should not be
interpreted in terms of not finding a DNS name. Rather, I imagine it is
because the way I have set up the XBAP does not look like it is being served
correctly.

What would help I think, would be an example of steps to host an XBAP page.
Just simple steps for hosting an xbap page with a label would probably
identify some step required for XBAP sites (which I don't know and therefore
can't describe what is needed). Can you try to set up a simple xbap page,
and detail steps in IIS? or do you know if there is a tutorial somewhere I
could follow?

Thanks, and I'll try to get back to you more quickly...

Hi,

Let's use webfetch to trace the rawdata of http request/response and check
what the exact error is returned from server-side.

HOW TO: Use Wfetch.exe to Troubleshoot HTTP Connections
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;284285

To use, please input:

Host: (The site's domainname/hostheader or servername or just IP address)
Port: (The site's port number if it isn't using the default 80)
Path: (The relative path of your page. e.g: /3D.xbap)
Auth: (in case the site is anonymous enabled, just use Anonymous, otherwise
please specify proper user credential)

Press Go! to issue a http request to the server and check what response is
returned. I think the trace should show us with the details. Please paste
the whole log data here.

I'll wait for your update. Thanks.

I can now say that when I browse the xbap file (served through iis 7) then
the result is
HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found

In order to get this I had to set the default document for the site to
(webname).xbap

I will be away from the office for a few days. I will try to complete this
test and report back by july 14.
