asp and live chat page.. can a chat page be updated live like an im does or can the page only be refreshed?

im kind of new to asp so im not sure of all the methods that can be
implemented so please bear with me..

i am making a simple chat page that will let a person chat with me in a live
conversation. i would like to do this using just asp etc.. no applets of any
kind. my question is..

once a person submits a message can the recipients chat window be updated
live ie. the same way a instant messenger app such as msn messenger or aim
can or can it only be done by refreshing the page say every 5 seconds. i
would prefer to have it a live update if at all possible.

can this be done?
