I am wondering if anyone knows about the shopping website: www.theFind.com.

There is a field on the right side of the home page that seems to be able to
figure out what major city/metropolitan area you live in.

I am almost certain is it not using cookies or Flash memory.

Is there a way for a web page to find this information?
Is it somehow getting it from the server of my service provider?

There are services that will guess your location from your IP address.
My guess is that this site is using one of those.

And it's not perfect. I'm in Washington, DC, but it tells me I'm in
Arlington, VA. Close, but no cigar.

Hi Tim,

Its called a dns reverse lookup (web search 4it)

There is global database of ISP root IP address blocks together with their
physical location of their server farms. This database can sometimes be out
of date but is regularly maintained.

From a reverse dns lookup you can find the physical address of the ISP's
server farm, the building address, the floor number and even the rack number
where the server is located.

Web services hosted on Clouds or some ISP's may give incorrect physical
locations for security reasons.

Web Search for Geolocation

for example www.bing.com's geolocation is in the European Union for me here
in Australia.

Do a tracert to view the routing report for a web address. Sometimes I am
routed via the Indian Ocean (Satellites) and other times by a Pacific cable
connection to the US based web addresses. It depends on the demand that
either of those routes are experiencing at the time.

Regards.
