internet exlporer

I have Vista on a 3 year old computer, the other day, the internet explorer
stopped working... It was fine in the am.. I turned off computer and when I
re started the graphic "e" was not beside the internet explore program on
the start menu and when I click it.. I got a quick window flash and close..
I did manage to read the message.."program running is too big for memory"
which makes no sense.. so far everything else works fine.. I can email and
log on to internet gaming sites I have shortcuts to.. but nothing that takes
a browser..
can anyone help me or do I have to take the computer into the geek squad??
