OE install location and message backup

2. I wish I can select the custom file folder
or location for storage of email messages,
address book, user accounts & settings.
3. I found that new / old email messages in certain folders
will disappear after computer hang and reboot.
Then I lost everything.
Can Outlook express improve this problem?
May be auto-save and auto-backup to prevent
lost messages.

You can do that only when you install IE. But since the vast majority of
IE and OE files are stored in the Windows folder, this will not help you
very much. It is *strongly* recommended that you do not attempt to move
IE/OE. If you really must move them, uninstall both, then re-install and
choose the location you want. This will have absolutely no effect on
where IE and OE store your user-specific files!

All accounts and settings are stored in the registry so there are no
files to move. For backup, see this:

If the computer hangs, you should *always* run Scandisk before you open
any programs that were open at the time of the hang. Otherwise files are
almost certainly marked as "open" on the disk, and so will be easily
damaged if you try to open them again. To keep OE safer, turn off
background compaction under Tools|Options|Maintenance, turn off any
email virus scanning (this is totally unnecessary for protection and
often damages OE data files). See this for details on keeping your OE

You can change the message store location under Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder. To change the other settings see Tom Koch's site at www.tomsterdam.com.

Try turning off background compaction under Tools | Options | Maintenance and compact manually and frequently using File | Folder | Compact all. This will help make the message store more stable.
