I would start by clearing the content of your Temporary Internet Files (TIF)
and perhaps your History Cache files...

For routine maintenance, clearing the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) cache
using the internal IE functions is sufficient. Under some conditions, and
perhaps for "general housekeeping" on a periodic schedule, deeper cleaning
may give some benefits.

For basic maintenance... in Internet Explorer
Tools (or View in IE4) | Internet Options | <general tab> |

Note: Clearing the History should remove the typed address listing - also,
when you are using the IE4 SP1/SP2 or IE5, you may find that this action
(plus a reboot) clears the "most recently used" entries on the Start Menu |
Run | Command line list (new 'feature'/bug).

*** For routine use, the basic internal IE options are "ok" but if you still
have problems, some deeper cleaning may be required...

* When you clear this content in IE, it will leave a file called "Index.dat"
in each folder. This file can grow to be quite large and may affect system
performance. Microsoft claims that the index.dat files are not compressed
during deletes but space inside is marked for re-use (I cannot confirm).
Over time, the index.dat file can grow quite large and may affect system
performance.

If you want to delete all the content including those Index.dat files, you
must do a bit of work. Unfortunately this file is open and locked while you
are in windows and so you can only remove/reset from DOS (not a DOS Window)
or with a third party shareware tool like TweakIE -- info, trial & shareware
download here:
http://www.tweakie.com/tweakie.htm -or-
http://www.wizsys.com/tweakie.htm

*** for 'do it yourself' clean-up, a DOS command to remove a directory like
TIF or history with all subdirectories and files is "Deltree". You must exit
to DOS (not a DOS Window) and remember in DOS you must use short file name
format.

The directories will be rebuilt by the system on reboot.

'step by step', do it yourself instructions to delete the TIF Cache and
History from DOS.

1) Reboot the system, when you see the message "Starting Windows 9x" press
the F8 key.- (Win98 users can also hold the CTRL key before bootup) WinNT
users want to kill any Explorer process and go to a command prompt.

2) Win9x users should see a black screen with numbered menu selections...Use
the arrow keys to scroll or choose the number for, "Command Prompt Only" from
the menu there and press ENTER to boot to DOS.

3) Enter the following commands at the command prompt:

Note: These commands assume that the Temporary Internet Files (TIF) and
History folder are in their default locations. (C:\Windows directory) -- With
multi users, you may need to modify the paths to point to TIF and history in
individual \windows\profiles\<username>\ disk directories (<username> == your
win9x login name).

From the DOS prompt type C: (Press ENTER)
CD C:\Windows (Press ENTER)
at C:\Windows> Type in smartdrv <ENTER>
at C:\Windows> Type in deltree tempor~1 <ENTER>
then confirm delete

*** optionally, if you want to clean out the History files use this command
line...

at C:\Windows> Type in deltree history <ENTER>
then confirm delete

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart Windows

*** If you just deleted a lot of file content, this may be a good time to
scan & defrag your disks... ***

* All Internet Explorer users may find the 'Cache Sentry' info of some
interest. The IE5 browser cache is much improved and more robust than the one
found in IE4 but there is still the possibility that folder content and
Index.dat files will become 'disconnected'. For a discussion of the various
aspects of cache management, see the information and 'Cache Sentry' utility
posted here...
