buggy browser window contents

im using ie4 that comes with win98 release 2.
if i have several ie4 windows open i often have the browser window contents
smear down the screen as i scoll thru a web page. this smear sometimes
disappears if i minimise the browser window then restore. however it often
happens that the contents of the various browser windows that i have open
get mixed up together within the browser window and smear. this just ends
up as a horrible, unreadable mess. to rectify it i have to shutdown ie4 and
restart.

this also happened when i was using win 95 and ie4 sp1 and in netscape.

why is this happening?
what can i do to stop it happening?
(apart from not having multiple active browser windows)
your help will be appreciated.
