Suddenly I cannot access pages and/or sites. I get an error message "
internet explorer cannot access site https://etcetc, an unexpected error has
occurred". Examples of such sites are the account management pages at my ISP
and my bank's online sign on page... Any clues or tips will be greatly
appreciated. (I have not messed with or changed security settings at all and
I could access these recently)

It sounds like the problem is the sites you are trying to access. Try getting
to their web-based email sites (if they have such sites), sending email, or use
tried and true methods such as calling them or sending a letter.

I had this problem once. For example I couldn't log on to Ebay for 2
weeks. I knew something was wrong and it wasn't my computer. I emailed
them and they said they had no problems and I should notify my ISP. I
did and there was a problem on their server. At the time I had 2 local
access numbers I could use to go online. They told me to try the other
number and I was able to log on to the sites I was having trouble
with. They fixed the server the next day. Hope this helps.

Try going to Internet Options / Advance

And checking HTTP 1.1 Settings... maybe it'll work... There's nothing to
lose.

I missed the early part of this conversation, but I'll offer this anyway: It
all shipping version of IE4 have problems with servers which return a server
header where part of the version string is non-numeric.

So, if you get:

HTTP/1.0 200 OK
Content-Type: text/html
Server: testserv/0.9beta

...

You will get a "The server return an unrecognized or invalid response".
Don't know if this is your problem since I missed the early part of the
conversation, but it frustrated me for quite a while before I tracked this
down.

If you are having trouble accessing secure sites (https://) try these things:

1. Start...Run and type in "regsvr32 rsabase.dll", Okay (no quotes)
Start...Run and type in "regsvr32 secur32.dll", Okay
Same for "schannel.dll"
Reboot.

2. In IE go to View...Internet Options...Advanced...Security. Check that
all 3 boxes are checked by PCT/SSL, Apply.

For more information, see these articles:

Error Msg: An Error Occurred in the Secure Channel Support
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q177/3/01.asp

Unable to Connect to Secure Web Page Using Internet Explorer

Some have also reported problems with proxy server settings.
Also the schannel.dll file may be damaged. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/ie/download and get the 128-bit patch to replace that
file.
