Dear Colleagues and Linguaphiles,
My students and I have used the phonetically-mapped Chandas input method
editor (IME) on 32-bit Windows (XP, Vista, Win7 beta and Win7 RC) for about
ten years with no problems. Problem: it does not work on my 64-bit machine
running Win7 RC. I can install and configure the Chandas Devanagari keyboard
on the machine but when I press the left ALT and SHIFT keys to switch from EN
(English) to SA (Sanskrit), it will not change. The other languages that I
have set up (e.g. Greek, have not problems.

Do any of you have a suggestion as to how we can use the Chandas IME on
Windows 64-bit? This would be a great help for my students and me because we
are moving into a 64-bit world of computing and do not wish to be left
behind. Thanks in advance for any help that you may offer.

Priya Shrivathsa, here is an update:
1. I sent Microsoft the Chandas IME and the installation instructions. They
confirmed that Chandas will not run on a 64-bit computer. They gave me a line
command to run it in 32-bit emulation mode and that did not work either. By
the way all of our testing was done on Vista and Windows 7 RC.
2. I contacted Microsoft India and they have agreed to help. I have not
heard back from them in the last few weeks.
3. I remapped the 64-bit Inscript Devanagari keyboard but there were many
problems among which: (a) halanta (viraama) would not work and (b) the 'sha'
character could not be added where the 'z' key is.
