A magazine article scanned and processed by the OCR software in Abbyy Fine
Reader Professional 8 is automatically converted into doc or .pdf format.
The documents scanned by Microsoft Image Composer can be saved only in .mic
format. If one sends it by e-mail to a friend, it can be read by the
receiver only if he/she has the Microsoft Image Composer on the computer. It
would have been so much easier, if Microsoft had given the option to select
the format in which the user wants to save the file.

Is there at least any converter provided in the Office 2007 pack for
converting a .mic file into a Word or Excel file?

If you do File | Save or Save As or Save Selection As, all have "Save as
type" dropdown under the textbox for file name. You can choose different
formats there, including JPEG and others.

There is no converter provided in Office 2007.

If the file is to be saved in jpg format and then converted to jpg and then
to doc format by all kinds of circuitous procedures, why scan it with
Microsoft Image Processor at all? When I scan a file on the HP PSC Scanner,
I have the option of saving it in jpg format right there. Since jpg files
tend to be very large, I was looking for a way to avoid saving any files in
jpg format and get the Scanner/Reader software directly convert it into a
doc format. But with Microsoft Image Processor, mic it has to be. Bad luck
for me.

But the file sizes of image composer documents cannot be smaller than jpegs,
because jpegs use lossy compression, while mic files do not.

If you need just to scan and have other possibilities then there is no
reason for Microsoft Image Composer.

Jan

PS. To make the jpegs smaller, you can either increase the compression
rate, or decrease the scanner's resolution.

Try

File / Save As / and click the file type drop down and select JPG.

You'll get a warning message but click OK.

Don't forget to save the original as a MIC incase you want to come back and
make changes to the MIC version.
