I had vb6 code using API which can retrieve serial number & the model number
of the hard disk, the vb6 code works fine in windows XP or 2k. When I ran
the code in Windows Vista, they return empty string (blank) serial number &
model number.
Does any body know why?

Hello,

Would you paste the vb code that query the Hard disk code here so that we could have a quick reproduce of the issue? or would you let us know the error message thrown by the application when it is run on Windows Vista?

Thanks,
Jialiang

Hello,

I have carefully tested your code and find that
SmartOpen = CreateFile("\\.\PhysicalDrive" & CStr(drvNumber), _
GENERIC_READ Or GENERIC_WRITE, _
FILE_SHARE_READ Or FILE_SHARE_WRITE, _
ByVal 0&, _
OPEN_EXISTING, _
0&, _
0&)
always return -1 when it runs in Vista. It is caused by the UAC of Windows Vista for security issues. See: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa906021.aspx.

If you turn off the UAC, you will find that the application works well.

Jialiang,

But isn't the whole point of writing applications now is to have User
Account Control set to On. In fact my app requires User Account Control to
communicate with other programs.

So is what you are saying throw out the Microsoft Security guidelines
because one wants to read the Disk Id.

Is there any unique processor or disk id that can be read from standard user
priviledges?

I think the thing to do is use the mac address

Dim mc As System.Management.ManagementClass
Dim mo As ManagementObject
mc = New ManagementClass("Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration")
Dim moc As ManagementObjectCollection = mc.GetInstances()
For Each mo In moc
If mo.Item("IPEnabled") = True Then
ListBox1.Items.Add("MAC address " &
mo.Item("MacAddress").ToString())
End If
Next

I have identical problem and almost identical code.
Your solution may work for a learned, single user.
If I need to use this to register my product, users are not going to be
happy to turn off UAC.
I think a lot of us need a REAL solution to this problem.

Hi, you can use a third-party dll to get the actual hdd serial number like
hddphysic.dll (http://rlbyte.com) . It works without needing admin rights.

Good luck.
