Dear Sir,
Could I change the password through outlook client when password is expired?
When I am prompted to change the expired password, it failed and there was a
error message "your password can not br changed, you must log on
oraganization network or contact system administrator" something like that.
I would like to verify if it is not possible to change the password just
through outlook client.

Thanks a lot,

Wayne

Dear customer:

Based on my knowledge, you can change your Windows domain password via Outlook. For more information about how to do that, please refer to the following document:

How to change the Windows domain password in Outlook 2003 and in Outlook 2007
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817888/en-us

In order to help you more efficient, I want to confirm the following information with you:

1.Please send the screen shot for error to v-ro...@microsoft.com for further research;

2.Which version and SP information are your Outlook 2003;

3.Does the RPC over HTTP work fine?

Additionally, you can perform the following steps to fix the issue”

1.Open ADUC, check whether you enable the following option on the user’s properties, if you uncheck it, and please check it;

User must change password at next log on

2.Check the effect.

Hope this helps, thanks for your cooperation.

1. The screen shot is the prompted windows "Your windows password could not
be changed. to change your password, you must log on to your organization's
network or contact your system administrator."

2. I am using XP with sp2 and outlook 2003 with sp2 and the hotfix KB921650.

3. RPC over HTTP work fine

4. I have checked the box you mentioned, when I open outlook, I was prompted
to change the password, after I entered the information (username, domain,
old password, new password etc), then i was prompted the windows discribed in
point 1.

I have searched the internet and noticed that expired password can not be
changed via outlook, please verify that, thanks a lot.

Dear Sir,

The support of microsoft has replied me that the user cannot change password
by outlook though rpc-over-http, instead of that, the users can change the
expired password by OWA.

Thanks,

Wayne

Dear customer:

Based on my research, I found that we can’t change password when we use Outlook to connect to our Exchange server mailbox by using RPC over HTTP. We can use the following methods to do that:

?Log on through a VPN connection to the network.

?Log on to the Local Area Network (LAN).

?Use the Internet Information Server (IIS) Change Password feature with Outlook Web Access (OWA). For information about how to configure the IIS Change Password feature, see the following article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base

For more information about that, please refer to the following document:

When you use Outlook to connect to your Exchange server mailbox by using RPC over HTTP, you receive messages that continuously prompt you for your network password

Hope this helps, if you need further help, please feel free to let me know.

I know this is years too late, but just in case someone else has this problem
I figured I would post another solution...

While Outlook will not allow you to change an expired password from a
non-domain computer, Remote Desktop will allow it. Even if you do not have
rights to login interactively it still works.

In my situation, I have an email-only account with a client. When my
password expires, I attempt to RDP to any machine on the domain and I am
prompted to change my password. After I change my password I am then told to
pound sand because I do not have rights to login interactively. But my
password is changed and Outlook is now happy again.
