For HIS 2009 “Client” Installation on Windows 2003 Server, the documentation
does not get installed when checking either Documentation or Developer area
or both on the HIS 2009 Installation Wizard screen. Why is this if check
boxes are allowed for installing doc with the client side.
With the HIS 2006 Installation Wizard screen, check boxes are allowed for
check off and HIS 2006 documentation does get installed for HIS 2006 client.
Tried uninstalling, reparing, a couple times. Same thing happened. Is this
a change starting with HIS 2009 client?
If the Windows Server 2003 system is a 64-bit system, check to see if the
following path exists.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 8
If this was the server is a 32-bit system, check for the following:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help 8
You can also look in Control Panel under "Add or Remove Programs" for the
following:
Microsoft Document Explorer 2005
If this program is not installed ( or ff the "Help 8" folders and associated
files do not exist), that explains the problem.
The HIS 2009 setup module that that is used to install the documentation is
looking to see if "Microsoft Document Explorer 2005" is installed. If it is
not, then the documentation does not get installed.
I installed the "Microsoft Document Explorer 2005" from the HIS 2006 install
media (under the \Platforms folder) by running dexplore.exe on my Windows 7
system with the HIS 2009 Client. After installing this, I ran a repair on
the HIS 2009 install and the documentation was installed correctly.
Thanks...

The "Target" in the shortcut would be as follows:
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\Help 9\dexplore.exe"
/helpcol
ms-help://MS.HIS.2006/HISMain/html/4e941061-dda8-4b51-8aa8-35fae35e2bbb.htm
Notice here that the path is to "Help 9", which is "Microsoft Document
Explorer 2008".
Thanks...

This is a W2003 (32 bit) server. Prior to HIS 2009 Client installation on
this server, MS Document Explorer 2005 or 2008 was not installed. As part of
the pre-requisites to HIS 2009, Microsoft installation wizard put on
Microsoft Document Explorer 2008 (I guess it went for latest). Document
explorer 2008 is what is currently listed in Add/Remove Programs.
With the install of Document Explorer 2008, I have the following location
where some files were placed: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\Help 9 contains a folder Microsoft Document Explorer 2008.
I tried setting up a work around desktop shortcut as you suggested below in
your email and fianlly found the HIS documentation on the W2003 32 bit server
- This worked!
After I noticed MS Document Explorer installed previously last week, I did
try a repair of HIS 2009, which did not resolve the Help F1 key situation.
Based on your mentioning a repair in your email that you performed on your
system, I just did another repair. After rebooting server and trying Help
under the Configurator, the errors still occur. That shouldn't be if I read
your email correctly.
I guess we can write all this up for our users and create shortcuts to the
DOC, it just seems more reasonable to use the regular toolbar Help area.
Can you look further into this since MS Document Explorer installed doesn't
appear to have helped this situation?
The workaround was to add the link using the path to "Microsoft Document
Explorer 2008", which is the version that is meant to be used. "Microsoft
Document Explorer 2008" is included with HIS 2009 as it is a pre-requisite.
The whole step about doing a repair is not needed since I found out that the
files are actually installed and the issue is that the link in the Start
Menu is not created. You just need to create the shortcut to the
documentation.
As far as the F1 Help scenario from within the HIS 2009 Configuration Tool,
the issue occurs when " Microsoft Document Explorer 2005" is not installed
on the system. If I install "Microsoft Document Explorer 2005", then error
does not occur and Help is launched. When I remove "Microsoft Document
Explorer 2005" the error comes back. As a mitigation, you can install
"Microsoft Document Explorer 2005" (as both versions can be installed at the
same time). You can find the install package on the HIS 2006 media under the
Platform folder. The file is dexplore.exe.

Per another of your suggestions, I just installed Document Explorer 2005
(versus 2008) from the HIS 2006 platform source code area. Now both Document
Exporer 2005 and 2008 exist on the test HIS 2009 client machine. With the
additon of Document Explorer 2005, I am now able to open the HIS 2009
configurator and perform a toolbar Help F1 function to get to the HIS 2009
digital documentation.
What we will have to do for our customers is give them an option to create a
shortcut desktop entry to the doc (without using Document Explorer 2005) or
just go ahead and install Document Explorer 2005 and use the toolbar Help
area under the HIS 2009 configurator as originally intended.
