This has turned into quite a hassle. I believe it is a software problem.
Yesterday I tried plugging in headphones and got the buzzing. Checked
the card and it is well seated. Couldn't find any loose/broken ground
wires. No conflicts showing in device manager.

Then I noticed that the buzzing only starts when 95 is about 3/4 loaded
so I think it is probably a driver problem. They tell me the computer
worked ok when they first got it and it came with Windows 3.1 but when
they put 95 on the buzzing started. Aha!! Then they put 3.1 back on but
still had the buzzing so they put 95 on again. No wonder the thing has
problems.

The puter came with a book for the Forte 16SBP sound card( but no
drivers disk) so I thought it had that sound card, but the sound
directory on the hard drive is called Sound16A which is another sound
card Packard Bell uses. Now I have to pull the sound card out to see
which card is actually installed( can't read it just looking in from the
side). Hopefully there will be some indication of what card it is.

Last night I went to Packard Bells web site and downloaded drivers for
both cards as well as Windows 95 drivers for the Sound16A card
(apparently they don't have 'em for the Forte 16 SBP card). But these
should be the latest drivers and hopefully installing these will solve
the problem. I'm hoping they have the Sound 16A card since I found
Windows 95 drivers for it. The drivers for the Forte card didn't
indicate they were specifically for 95.

THEY SHOULD PASS A LAW FORCING ALL COMPUTER MAKERS TO USE ONLY
SOUNDBLASTER SOUND CARDS!!! These other so called compatible cards
create nothing but problems. <smile>

If replacing the drivers doesn't work..I'm gonna have 'em get a
Soundblaster 16 and install that in place of the current card. Shouldn't
be any problem then.

Boy, do I agree with you there!!! (I bet Creative Labs would love that
too!)

It sounds like you are on the right track..SB cards are so cheap these
days, it might be worth it to just replace it (and will save headaches
later on when they try to use software that doesnt know what to do with
the current card!)

Good luck!!

Good luck finding a card in your computer! The PB I worked on it was
built into the mother board. The last Pentium I just put together hac an
Atlantis mother board which has sound and video built in. I did not know
the guy only had a cheap set of Sound Blaster speakers that need some
power in order to hear them..... to make a long story short, it was
easier to give him my powered speakers and up the power to my Sound
Blaster than it was to diable the on board card and install a sound
Blaster on the new mother board. Yes, those cheap Sound Blaster speakers
sound like.......(you know).

Hi there,

I have the Forte 16 SBP in my Packard Bell. This is actually an Aztech
Sound Galaxy Nova 16 - the drivers for this card ship with win 95 and work
fine. Win 95 had no trouble detecting the card during install for me. Have
you tried deleting the card from the device manager and letting win 95 try
to detect the card?

cheers
