USB devices not recognized

This is what happened to a friends computer. Her daughter had the
camera connected and disconnected it using "Safely remove hardware".
Ever since then the only USB device the computer will recognize is the
camera (as a Mass Storage Device"). The previously working printer and
flash drive show as "Unknown Device". She has tried to rectify this
using system restore but no luck.

We have also tried uninstalling, reinstalling etc but nothing works,
just reads in Device Manager as Unknown Device. When we check
properties it tell us that there is no driver installed. (except, of
course, for the camera)

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried deleting the (unknown) device in Device Manager? That would
be one of the first things I'd try.
