Since I recently update my iMac to 10.15 Catalina, I then had to update the software on my Brother MFC-J6530DW printer. Everything worked fine for a while but now I can't print or scan directly from my mac. Tried downloading the Brother software again and it couldn't find my printer even though it is connected to my home network. Have contacted Brother support 3 times and followed their instructions but still with no luck. I am thinking that this may be an Apple issue rather than brother.?

In the meantime I have downloaded the iPrint & Scan app and I can now scan from my printer, but when I wish to print I only have the option to print photos and cannot print documents? Does anyone know how to print anything other than photos using this app? A despairing thankyou.

Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately, for me, it did not work switching to allow applications from anywhere. With Mac OS 11 it still gives that same error message. My only solution seems to be to use the iPrint/Scan app and it doesn't open from the printer/scanner driver.

I haven't had any luck using my Brother scanner with Image Capture since Catalina was released -- but I haven't spent much time researching the problem. I discovered the Brother iPrint&Scan app in the Mac App Store. It works and after using it a couple of times I decided that I preferred it to Image Capture. See: -iprint-scan/id1193539993?mt=12

Strange. I've been using the print/scan option with Image Capture until the upgrade to BigSur from Catalina. No problems on any of my 5 computers. Only with the BigSur upgrade did this weird permissions thing begin. Only with the Scanner, not with the printer.

This happened to me when I tried to open the scanner from within the system preference pointers and scanner. I think it happens because the printer/scanner driver is old, and does not go well with Big Sur. Brother, apparently, stopped issuing new drivers with OS 10.15.

Go to the Apple applications store, and download the most recent version of "Brother iPrint and Scan". Open the scanner, or initiate a scan, from within this application. when I initiate from within the new brother software, rather than from within apple software, it works.

If you need hard copies of something (like JPEGs, PDFs, web pages, or Microsoft Office files) you can send them straight to your nearest printer. And, if you have a document that you want to store in the cloud or share, you can use your nearest Brother scanner or All-in-Ones to upload it wherever you want, from iCloud to your e-mail.

iPrint&Scan gives you a lot more control over your print job than other built-in apps. Compatible with both Apple iOS and Android, iPrint&Scan automatically finds all the Brother devices on your wireless network. So if you need hard copies of something (like JPEGs, PDFs, web pages, or Microsoft Office files) you can send them straight to your nearest printer. And, if you have a document that you want to store in the cloud or share, you can use your nearest Brother scanner or All-in-Ones to upload it wherever you want, from iCloud to your e-mail.
