Social media world allows you to expand the number of business and/or
social contacts by making new and old connections. Social networking
allows you to connect with people from all over the world even.
However, because it's so simple to connect, connect, connect and have
hundreds of contacts it's also too easy to build up quantity and
neglect quality. Unless you're using social networking as a popularity
contest and to build a huge list of people that you don't really know,
we recommend that you work on building your connections. We call this
building the relationship. Besides, getting more names added to your
social networking site without building the connection/relationship
will eventually lead to people leaving your network anyway. And what's
the point of just connecting to connect?
In today's competitive market, it's not a matter of building a
business or a website and then instantly, the traffic and sales will
come. Business is based on word of mouth, referrals, and
relationships. Well, come to think of it, that's basically the way
that successful business have always worked. Yet with technology and
the Internet, this is easily forgotten. Not even a handshake or a
personal message is needed to add another contact to your list of
friends. Yet it is crucial that you do send a personable message and
work on your connections as people may not buy or do what you wish for
them to do right away but as you build the connection and develop a
"relationship", knowledge, professionalism, and trust develops. Your
connections and relationships grow and the people who you have taken
the time to get to know are the ones who will refer you to people they
know. They're the ones who will turn to you when they need something
or know someone who needs and wants what you have to offer. These
developed connections will be the ones who will scratch your back as
you scratch theirs.
Building a connection/relationship means keeping in constant
communication, offering advice and assistance, and promoting and
supporting others. It means getting to know the other person and
learning who they are and what they do. It's not about cramming what
you have to offer in their faces. This is also why telemarketing, mass
e-mails, and sending out flyers to random people isn't very effective.
Take the time to get to know your connections. Allow them to get to
know you. Show them your professional and personable YOU.
So remember when you're online doing some business and when you're
trying to expand your business, be sure to work on those connections
and build them up into relationships. This will take time and effort
but you'll be rewarded in the long run just as they too will be
rewarded. People turn to those who they know and trust and so do you.
