I dont' know what the letters are for, but the round circles on the wings
and fuselage are aiming points for my 30mm rounds..hehe...seriously, though,
I have no idea. What game is that pic from? It's not FA is it?

They are the squad and group letters Douglas Bader had DB before the
roundel but most were arbitrary

Its from another online game called Aces High, it just left beta. They give
you 2 free weeks to try it out to see if you like it. They are patching
fairly often and adding new planes and stuff and fine tuning. The
programmers even jump into the game once in while to see whats going on and
how the latest build is working out and how the players like the game, what
planes they want to see and so forth. It does have a steeper learning curve
then FA though, but almost everything does. They even have an Italian plane
in there, the Macchi 205

The "JE J" on the spit 14 and 9 in FA1.5 stands for "Johnny Johnson". A
Canadian Ace who flew the Spitfire during W.W. II.

Btw - if you look forward of the canopy, there is a small red and white
circle..........that is a Canadian Maple Leaf.

RF was the code for 303 Squadron. Yes, a Polish squadron (good eye).
The M is just the individual aircraft's code.

303 was the top scoring squadron in the Battle of Britain.

Johnnie Johnson was not a Canadian .. he did however command a Canadian
Squadron and the Canadian Wing : )

'Johnnie ' Johnson D.S.O., D.F.C. - from Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire,
one of the best known pilots of the war, eventually Group Captain, after the
war he became Air Vice Marshal. Johnson kept his flying going throughout his
service life, including a B26 over enemy lines in Korea and F-86 Sabres with
the US Air Force. Joined 616 in early September 1940, but shortly after
underwent surgery to correct a rugby injury to his shoulder, so didn't
become operational until after the Battle of Britain.

Scored his first victory with 616 on 26th June 1941. Other victories
included a 109 on 14 July 1941 and two 109s on 21 September 1941. Took
command of 610 squadron on the 10th July 1942, then went on to lead the
Kenley Wing (Canadian), followed by another Canadian Wing after a major
reorganisation. Johnson led something of a charmed life, as his plane was
only hit once throughout the war. Of his 38 kills, all bar one were single
engined fighters.

Big shots (Squadron, Group, or Wing Comanders) got to put
their initial on the plane, hence, Bader had DB something,
Hub Zemke had something, something, Z, etc. But the plane
can't be Polish and Canadian, can it?

Think they are referring to two different planes .. the Spit from Aces
High is Polish .. the one in Fighter Ace is Johnnie Johnson's : )

I would like to know what the letters mean on the fuselege of the plane and
any other information anyone can share thanks.  This plane has RF M on it,
what would that mean?  I see the Polish symbol on the nose meaning it was
with one of the polish sqds in the RAF.  Thanks.

British Aircraft Markings

Three-letter codes

During WWII, the RAF used three-letter aircraft codes. Two letters, painted before the roundel, indicated the unit; the third, painted aft of the roundel, the individual aircraft. Sometimes the letters were put in other places. These codes were also used by the RCAF, SAAF, RNZAF, USAAF units of the 8th and 9th AF, and for some time by post-war Belgian units.
