in the directory where i'm saving all of my pages in my web, there are two
directories, \_vti_cnf\ and \_vti_pvt\, i don't know what they are for?

they were automatically created, and i was wondering if they are absolutely
necessary...

They are for the frontpage extensions. DO NOT DELETE if you use the
frontpage publish facility or frontpage feature.

Not sure off the top of my head. The folders are mainly used to keep track
of what files have been changed. To test whatever your going to do, just
upload to your site the files without the added directories and if all works
you can take it from there.

The _vti stuff is used for the FP Server Extensions AND to keep track of
changes.
If you use FTP to transfer your files and you don't use any of the
Extensions such as FP counters, etc), then you don't need to send these
files to your webserver.
You can delete them, BUT FP will recreate them next time you open the web,
so its useless to try.
HTH.
