I am looking into writing a tracking program that would use barcodes. I
would like to know what software/hardware options I have. Ideally, I would
like to find an ActiveX control that handles barcodes. Can anyone steer me
in the right direction?

You can either scan barcodes with a keyboard wedge scanner or through a
serial interface, depending on the type of barcode reader. Most barcode
readers support the standard EAN32 code.

For tracking, check Moxa Inc, I don't have an address (if you can't find it
I'll look it up for you). They have a hardware device you can plug into
your computer so you can have 128 COM-ports. It comes with software to read
and write to these port using standard languages such as Foxpro. The
advantage is you don't need a PC on every tracking spot, you can use a RS232
or RS422 serial interface so each post is directy linked to a single scanner
server. In my experience it's a very stable and easy to use product once
you get trough the learning curve in installing the hardware and using the
software driver.
