My daughter has some VOB files (2) that she produced. THey look fine when
viewed on a DVD player. I copied the DVD onto a hard dirve in their original
structure, which was: 2 folders at the root of the DVD, AUDIO_TS and
VIDEO_TS. Audio_TS was empty but VIDEO_TS had the following files:
VIDEO_TS.BUP, (14 KB)
VIDEO_TS.IFO, (14 KB)
VIDEO_TS.VOB, (114 kb)
VTS_01_0.BUP, (26 KB)
VTS_01_0IFO, (26 KB)
VTS_01_0.VOB, (10 KB)
VTS_01_1.VOB (538,636 KB)

She produced them wiht Final Cut.

I would like to import them into Expression Encoder and then put them on the
web i a Silverlight video

This is the file you need:

VTS_01_1.VOB (538,636 KB)

If it doesn't impot you can also rename VTS_01_1.VOB to VTS_01_1.MPG.
You must have a mpeg2 codec installed!! There are several free available on
the net.

Thanks, that helped a lot. Now I can view the video in Media Player, so I
must have an mpeg2 codec, (no?). (Using Vista Business) When I try to view it
in Expression Encoder, however, I get the audio, but no video. Do I need to
specifically assign a codec to Expression Encoder? The codec may be the one
installed when I bought a Roxio product for Vista DVD viewing, but I have no
idea of its name.

Thanks,

Paolo

If you can view the video file in Media Player then there is a mpeg2 codec
installed.
I don't know why you have no video in Expression.
Maybe try another codec?

In Expression Encoder, under Options->compatibility, is the mpeg2 codec
listed and enabled?

Thank you very much for your help.

I have 3 codecs listed there:

mpg2splt.ax (AC3 Parser Filter) and (MPEG-2 Splitter)
msmpeg2adec.dll (Microsoft MPEG1)
msmpeg2vdec.dll (Microsoft MPEG-2)

All three have subcomponents listed in the parens.

The vendor is in all cases Microsoft.

I have Vista Premium I am streaming audio to my XBOX 360 as a media extender
and that works great. I cannot convert or stream or play any VTS/ VOB files
Media Center does not have the codecs so I purchased Nero Ultra 8 loaded up
my home videos from my sony dvd disc burned it to my external hard drive
previewed perfectly as it was burning but playback for the orginal the back
ground of the sky was digitized in all black? I also tried the free media
converters as well as one I purchased most of them just lock down the whole
media center or they just do not work. I know I have a lot of wine with my
cheese but am I asking to much for Christmas to be able to show some family
videos in my den instead of the whole family huddleing up around a small
monitor as if to run a football Play? If there is no resolution yet is there
a digital camera camcorder that will have the right format or codecs so I can
just download my video to my hard drive and call it a day?

Right click the file and choose properties. Change default program to Movie
Maker. that is option 1. This will make it so the default is Movie Maker, if
that is your intent.

Option 2: Right click and choose open with. Then choose Movie Maker. You now
have the new program in the Open With menu, although you can specify always
open with, which will do the same as option 1.

Option 3: Go into your user tree and find Send To. Add a short cut to Movie
Maker. You then right click and choose send to >> Movie Maker. This is much
like Open With.

Two of these options can set Movie Maker as default.

Sorry Movie Maker does not provide better recent lists, but it is a "free"
program and designed to add value to windows.

Peace and Grace,
