What are workarounds to exchange 2000 open relay issues?
I want to be able to receive mail from all external mail
sources however I do not want unauthorized people to be
able to access our smtp service and send mail via telnet.
I have an Exchange Server with a public ip address. Any
suggestions are appreciated.

if you use the default installation settings.. you are not an open relay...

the only way people can use the telnet from your smtp prompt is if you ARE
open from my understanding..

i have an e2k machine running on the net also.. no open relay...

Ok, thanks for your reply. I am open now, how do I stop
this while still receiving email from all sources?

lemme check my settings..

in system manager..

protocols \ smtp

Only the list below should be on

the bottom check box "allow users who successfully authenticate to relay
regardless should be checked..

if you want to check your mail server..

head to

www.ordb.org and submit your ip address... put in an email address you can
check from and you will then get an email making sure yoiu are you and then
it will check your ip...

Thank you once again for your reply. The settings under
the relay button on the smtp virtual server are already
set to "allow all computers which successfully
authenticate to relay, regardless of the list above". I'm
assuming that when computers authenticate to this virtual
server, they are using the settings I have set in the
authentication button. My settings have to be set to
anonymous to allow incoming mail from outside sources. As
soon as I decheck the anonymous access checkbox, nobody
from the outside can send mail to our internal network.
This does fix the problem of being able to connect to our
server via telnet and relaying mail, however creates the
new problem as described.

PS. I will try ordb.org. Thank you for your assistance.
Any other suggestions?

strange that you are having this problem..

i recieve internet mail for 6 domains and i have my settings out of the
box.. they come that way on e2k now..

something else is wrong.. because i have checked my smtp server on a few
relay checks and its fine...

my smtp server also accepts anonymous, and the other three (not TLS)

they are all checked.. and i recieve from internet smtp servers just fine..

I think you need to ensure that "external sender" cannot
send mail to "external recipient". You do this by
selecting Properties from your SMTP virtual server,
selectin "Access" tab, then the "Relay" button then ensure
you have:

"Only the list below"
(ensure no entries in the list)

Check the "Allow all computers which sucessfully
authenticate to relay, regardless of list above" box

You internal users can send out because of the checkbox
clause but external people cannot send out. External
people can still email inwards though.
