I had a working Exch2k server which I had to move to
another physical server. All of that is fine. I also had
to change the SMTP host name as we were not allowed to use
the old one anymore. Now, I can receive email, but not
able to send out. If I look at SMTP Queue they are piled
there. Looking at the properties of eavh queued item
reveal the message ("The remote SMTP service rejected AUTH
negotiation."). I have contacted the ISP and verified that
all the details are correct. I even tried direct
connection to ISP from Outlook express to verify the
settings are correct. Why am I getting this error message.
Any ideas? I would be grateful. I am rather desperate.
Many thanks.
Jessica
If understand your issue, you are forwarding to a smarthost for your
outbound mail. To help narrow down what could be causing the issue, I have
a few questions.
How do you have this configured? Is it on an SMTP connector?
Does this smarthost require authentication for you to drop mail to them or
do they just accept mail from your domain?
If it requires authentication, how do you have it configured to
authenticate?
Best Regards,
Beth

Thank you for your reply.
I am forwarding to a smart host (my ISP's smtp). This is
setup through System Manager->Server->Protocols->SMTP-
>Default SMTP virtual Server->Properties->Delivery.
I have setup the ISP's smtp under Advanced->Smart Host and
setup username and password under Outbound Security->Basic
Authentication.
The mails remain in the queue. If I go to the properties
of any item in the Queue, I see the error message "The
remote SMTP service rejected AUTH negotiation.".
I contacted the ISP, but after a lot of checking, nothing
seemed to be wrong on their end. I tried setting up an
account in outlook express on the server and give it the
same smtp settings as the exchange server. It works fine
and sends mail out, which proofs that the smtp name and
security settings are correct. Authentication is by user
name and password and not just domain. every few minutes I
am getting one entry in eventlog Id = 929 from MSEXchange
Transport category Routing Engine/Service as follwos:

I would be grateful for any help.

I realised a major problem and that was that the password,
although correct under SMTP virtual server, it wasn't
correct under SMTP connector. Now messages go out
instantly.
Many thanks
