ediscovery of exchange 2000 mailboxes from backup tapes

I just migrated from Ex2000 to Ex2007.
We are starting to get legal requests for ediscovery for mailboxes on the
Ex2000 system from say, 3 years ago. That data is on backup tape.
How can I retrieve that data? There will be various versions of
Veritas/Symantec Backup Exec involved. I assume a 3rd party tool will do
this, but I haven't found the one that specifically states this.
Any suggestions?

I would take a look at Quest Recovery Manager or OnTrack PowerControls.
Both allow extracting mailboxes directly from tape so you don't have to keep
an old Exchange server around.
