When I tried to do the defrag on the exchange database public information
store I get this error. "Operation terminated with error -1018
(JET_errReadVerifyFailure. checksum error on a database page) after x
seconds. Should I do the eseutil /p option to repair or is there any other
option. My database is working fine but cannot backup.

-1018 is typically a hardware problem, so you need to troubleshoot that.
Can you bring up another Exchange server into the org? You can then move
the mailboxes across, troubleshoot the issue, and, if fixed, move the users
back to the original server. Eseutil /p is usually the last resort.

OK, if you're confident the hardware is ok....

Is the Standard or Enterprise Edition? If Enterprise, create another
database and move the users across.

How did you check your hardware?

Did you check whether you have latest firmware of Raid Controller?
Did you check whether the SCSI/SATA HD having need for firmware upgrade?
How about read/write cache or write through?
Did you check your backplane if you're using SCSI SCA-80/SATA multi drives?
The backplane's unstable signale might also cause the corrupted data,
checksum error!!
What is the stripe size of your container? normally with 64K but using 256K
will
increase pretty much of read/write delay and might cause the problem of
database integrity!!!

Check it back with your hardware vendor...database keep getting checksum
error so is the
its integrity until it is unsuable at all in the future no matter how you
can try to fix it,,,the data might have been corrupted then committed into
the database,,,very very hard to fix. It is very critical problem that you
need to be paying attention.

good luck,
J.H
