This article is also a must read : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328804
The database you want do defrag must be dismounted or the information store
service must be stopped.
If you want to defrag on another computer both the edb file and the stm file
must be copied to this computer (and after defragmentation must be copied
back).
You can tell eseutil to use a temp directory on another server and write the
defragmented database to this drive - after defragmentation is over eseutil
can copy the new files back or let the database stay on the network drive
and let you copy the files manually (depends on the command line switches
entered by you).
Remember to make a backup before starting.

Thank you for posting here!
Thanks for Leif's sharing. The detailed information you need is provided in
the KB 328804 article provided by Leif. Also, I have listed some key
information to answer your questions as below:
1. Before you perform the defragment, it is strongly recommended that you
backup the the Exchange database.
How to Back Up and Restore an Exchange Computer by Using the Windows Backup
Program
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=258243
2. We need to dismount the store on which you want to perform the
defragment.
3. The amount of free disk space needed to defragment a database (Eseutil
/d) is 110 percent of the size of the file being defragmented. More
information is documented in the following Microsoft KB article:
XADM: Free Disk Space Requirements for Eseutil.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=183888
4. If the drive which hosts the Exchange dababases on your side does not
have such much free space, we can use the Eseutil /t switch to redirect the
temporary defragmentation database to a drive with plenty of free space.
The command would be similar to the following one:
c:\program files\exchsrvr\bin>eseutil /d "c:\program
files\exchsrvr\mdbdata\priv1.edb" /tG:\Folder1\TempDfrg.edb
Note: This command will automatically move defraged database to the
original location and you do not need to do this manually.
You can refer to the following Microsoft KB article for more information
about this:
255035 XADM: How to Recover Hard Disk Space from Exchange Server Databases
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=255035
Note: You can refer to the "Offline Defragmentation with Redirected
Temporary Database" section.
5. Do NOT use eseutil /p command if you just want to perform an offline
defragment.
6. After the offline defragment, please also take a backup of the database.
I hope the information above is helpful.
If anything in my post is unclear, feel free to let me know.
Have a good day!
Thanks & regards,
Winfred Weng

My problem is somewhat similar to Brian's, except that I am attempting to
defrag my personal PC. I continue getting "not enough space" results for a
more than a few files. How do I defragment files that are too large to
defragment?
I have used the defrag option on my Windows PC. My PC information is as
follows:
Windows XP (2002 Version)
20 GB Hard drive
2.64 GB Free space
Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated. If you need
additional information re: my PC, let me know. Thank you.
