I know that this may not be the correct forum to ask this
question but please humor me. I've not been able to do a
brick level backup (using ArcServe V9.1)on my Exchange2K
server for a while now and everything appears to be
installed properly incuding the Exchange agents. It tries
to back up but is so slow that only a few dozen of the
mailboxes are backed up in a 12 hour preriod. It took 25
min to just backup my own mailbox as a test. I've tried
talking to the tech support at CA but I'm getting tired
of jumping through hoops for them and getting no where.
Have any of you all had this kind of problem before with
brick level backups? I've disabled virus scanning and
that didn't help. If you all have any ideas I would
appreciate hearing from you. Thanks ahead of time.

It's the correct forum. It's also one of the main reasons that I never
advocate performing brick-backups. While the speed you are seeing is beyond
what I would consider slow even for a brick-backup, it's still one of the
major problems with a brick-backup. What I would suggest is to configure
both Deleted Items retention AND Deleted Mailbox Retention, then turn off
Mailbox-level backups and simply back up the Storage Group. You will find
that the backup takes DRASTICALLY less time as well as less tape, and you
will also find that you still have 99% of the features that a brick-backup
would give you in terms of recovery.

As an example, I currently back up a 28gb database in about 20 minutes doing
only an online backup of the Storage Group. It's all I need.

Slow backups are a problem with BrightStor (Arcserve).
I've been having the same problem also. I've been
fighting CA tech support for over a year and FINALLY got
to a senior tech. Bottom line there are some
configurations that need to be done on the CLIENT side
that most of the first line techs don't know anything
about. As far as specificts see if you can get throught
to Ryan (his full name is Gautham, Siddharth). He's a
senior tech there and has been the only one to give me
this information.

Hope this helps
Richard
