Does Exchange 2000 Require Active Directory?

Hi all,
This has probably been addressed in the past, however, I could not
find a current thread that answers this question.
We're planning on migrating from GroupWise to Exchange 2000, but I'd
like to know if I have to have Active Directory deployed for Exchange
to be installed and runing. Is it possible to stay on a NT domain
model and install Exchange 2000 on a Win2k Advanced Server which is
simply a member server (no ADS)? Thanks much.
