I brought this subject up back in 2001 and wanted to readdress it now that
2000 has been out for a while.
Background operations like flushing cache notwithstanding, is there a way to
temporarily halt components of Exchange 2000 so I can make a clean point in
time(PIT) image of Exchange 2000?
Point it time imaging is fairly new technology, but it represents the
opportunity to make backups of Exchange 2000 without slowing down operations
over a length of time, which is what a lot of backup "agents" do.
If I could stop the store for the amount of time needed to make a clean PIT
image, I could backup the PIT image offline, and even have it available in
case a restore is needed. Instead of waiting on a tape restore.
You guys are the Guru's so any comments or direction are appreciated.

The easiest way to do this is programmatically dismount the storage
group you want to take a snapshot of. Of course, that means all
connected users whose mailboxes are homed there lose their connections.
This isn't a terribly big deal for Outlook 2002 and later users, since
the client's smart enough to transparently retry the connection.
Disclaimer: if PSS catches you doing this, they will point you to KB
article Q221756 (summary: "don't come whining to us"). You might want to
read that article, Q296788, and Q237767 to get a better feel for what
you have to look forward to during a restore.
Cheers,
-Paul
