I have successfully installed a new Exchange Server 2003 and followed the
steps to remove the first Exchange server in the organization. When I go to
uninstall Exchange from the old server, I receive an error during Microsoft
Exchange Forest Preparation "Setup failed while installing sub-component
Microsoft Windows Active Directory schema update with error code 0xC1037986
(please consult the installation log for a detailed description). You may
cancel the installation or try the failed step again." I am left with either
retry or cancel. When I click cancel, the un-installation continues (with
red Xs) until another error for Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools
"This application has failed to start because msvcp60.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem." My only option is OK.

The errors for the installation wizard contain:
Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools: "An unknown error has occurred.

Facility: Win32
ID no: e0070101
Microsoft Exchange Setup"

Microsoft Exchange Forest Preparation: "Cannot find the file.

ID no: c1037986
Microsoft Exchange Setup"

Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services: "An unknown error
has occurred.

Facility: Win32
ID no: e0070101
Microsoft Exchange Setup"

The domain did contain a previous Exchange 5.5 server that has long been
taken offline. I believe this may not have been done 100% correctly and
could be the cause to this issue. I have noticed some KB articles pertaining
to installing Exchange Server 2003 on a Windows 2000 server. I have three
servers running Windows Server 2003 standard with service pack 2 where two of
them have Exchange 2003 service pack 2 installed -- no Windows 2000 servers.
I would like to remove Exchange from one of them. I have successfully been
able to demote the server already.

Thanks in advance,

Jeremy

Removal of the Exchange server using ESM was successful. I then disjoined
the server from the domain. Thanks for your help.
