Our company is in the process of upgrading our current Exchange 2003 server
to Exchange 2007. In order to install our exchange 2007 server we must
prepare our Active Directory - We purchased the exchange server 2007 64 bit
and it will be install in a Windows 2008 Server 64 bit.

When I try to run the setup.com/PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions we are
getting the following message.

X:\Exchange 2007\Extract 2007>setup.com /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions

The image file X:\Exchange 2007\Extract 2007\Setup.com is valid, but is for
a ma
chine type other than the current machine.

The setup.com info is as follows:
Version is 8.1.240.3
Size: 353 KB
I am log into the DM server as a domain administrator.

My guess is this is do to the 32 bit of our AD - Is there a way I can run
the setup.com command to upgrade the AD? - if so how?
Can I download this 32 bit utility from anywhere on the web and run it on
the AD?

Please reply with your comments and suggestions

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and information with this matter!

If your DCs are all 32bit you will want to do all of the preps on the
Exchange servers. Then you won't have a problem. There isn't a
difference between what gets added to AD between 32/64 so don't fret
there. Just apply the installations on the box that matches the
binaries.

You can download the 32-bit version of Exchange 2007 and use it against a
32-bit DC to prepare AD. Don't use the 32-bit version of Exchange for
anything other than this (or to install the management tools on a 32-bit
box).

Michael - Thank you so much for your time and information - Do you know where
I can download the Exchange 2007 32 bit server from?

Mark - Thank you for your information. Can you please let me know how can we
run the setup.com from the 64bit Windows 2008 server to upgrade our 32bit AD?

Thank you once again!

Huh?
It's the same commands.
You just run them on the Exchange Server which is 64bit.

We are running into the same problem. The server we have is a 32bit and
the Exchange is a 64bit program which won't run.
I am downloading the 32bit version of Exchange 2007, plan to run the
setup /pl on the domain controllers and hopefully this works to ready
the system to install the 2007 version 64bit on one sub-domain.

Hello Peterand,

Why not follow Mark's advice, and just run it on the 64 bit server that you
are going to run Exchange on?

We tried that, but it didn't work. The error is as follows:

Preparing Exchange Setup
No server roles will be installed

Performing Microsoft Exchange server Prerequisite Check

Organization Checks................................FAILED
Global updates need to be made to the Active Directory, and this user
account is not a member fo the 'Enterprise Admins' group.

The Exchange Server Setup operation did not complete. For more
information etc.

We also tried it with a couple of different accounts. We have the top
domain and 3 domains below it in different communities. It was ran in a
sub domain.
So that is why I am thinking that I can possibly run the Evaluation 32bit
version on the top Domain Controller which is 2003 32bit, only running the
setup /pl

Any advice?
Peter

Yes, you can download the 32-bit evaluation version of Exchange 2007 SP2 and
run that setup.com on the domain controller.

That's easy enough to suggest, and while it's not a bad suggestion, I must
share that I've had troubles at customer sites even though we had everything
set and ended up just running the PrepareSchema and PrepareAD steps on a DC
just to get the job done, especially with such one-time processes.

Ed,

I ran into same issue while trying to run /preparead on a windows 2003
domain controller before introducing first exchange 2007 server. I
searched for exchange 2007 eval on ms website so I can run x32 bit /
preparead but the site states this is no longer available and directs
me to exchange 2010 site. The domain I'm working with has no
subdomains or trusts, just one domain. I'm afraid running /preparead
on exchange 2007 box as suggested above may damage schema. Is this
safe to do? What precautions can I take other than backing up C and
system state on dc?

Thanks,
Marlon

Running the preparation steps on a 64-bit machine with the 64-bit
distribution is equivalent to running it on a 32-bit machine with the 32-bit
distribution and is no more likely to damage your schema.

If you have more than one DC you can suspend replication in and out of the
Schema Master while you've performed the upgrade so that if there is a
failure you can remove the failed upgraded server and seize the FSMO roles
on another server that is unaffected by the upgrade.

Here is the download point for Exchange 2007 32-bit.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=4c4bd2a3-5e50-42b0-8bbb-2cc9afe3216a

Choose the 32-bit download after you go through the registration (which you
can decline to do).
