I have 1 exchange server (Exchange 2003 Sp2). In ESM, I enabled all the
setting under Mobile Services. I have no problems with OMA but I keep
getting Event ID 3031 in the exchange server logs when trying to use
ActiveSync (Direct Push). The device never sync because of the error.

I read kb 817379 but I don't see how it applies to my situation. I don't hav
FBA enabled and the Exchange server is not configured to require SSL. Does
this article actually applies to my sitaution and I need to create a
secondary virtual directory in order to resolve this issue?

I guess I don't fully understand the kb, I am left thinking "Do I need a
front-end server in order to use Direct Push?"

Thanks,

cclark

You really need SSL. I would suggest buying a third party cert (GoDaddy's
turbossl cert is cheap and works fine) instead of rolling your own. It will
work just fine - you don't need multiple virtual servers or anything like
that.

Thank you. I thought a while ago I read documentation that says that I'll
need SSL in order to get ActiveSync to work but I haven't been able to find
the documentation now. You suggest buying a third party cert because it
keeps things simple?

I'm not actually 100% sure you *need* it. I know you will definitely *want*
it ... and I know it works with it.

Yes. You don't want to deal with exporting & manually installing certs on WM
devices, trust me.
