I have been holding out for a Syamntec AV Solution for my Exchange server, but
I dont think I can afford to wait much longer. If you have any recomendations
or ideas, let me know.

I agree, it works great and I haven't had any problems with it (virus protection can be a double-edged sword). I also use ServerProtect for the Netware servers along with PC-cillin 97 Corporate Edition for the desktops.
ScanMail is by Trend Micro

Scan Mail for Exchange is available in market & is very successful .
We are using it on a very big exchange network. I think it is the best you can download an evaluation copy from internet .
Further enqueries & sugession are welcome.

I've had fantastic success with Innoculan from Cheyenne. We have had almost
zero virus issues since we loaded it about a year ago.

I wanted to try the "Exchange agent" part of this, but it required the
old Exchange Client to be installed - whats up with this? I'm not
installing that old thing...

Are there any anti-virus programs that can actually scan email going
through the Exchange server - not just an NT anti-virus, but a full
blown "as messages go through the queue they are scanned" type of
thing?

We started using Inoculan when it first came out, end of '96 or so. It
was great until CA bought Cheyenne. Then they started releasing sig
updates that would break the engine. Specifically, attachments were
being left in the \inoculan\tmp directory, even if they were cleaned.
Our users would not get the cleaned attachment, and we had no idea which
document belonged to which user.

AFter evaluating Trend Micro's Scanmail (1.x) we switched. It is very
easy to install (a major problem with Inoculan) and tech support is NOT
a one hour call just to talk with a technician. The 1.x version
requires Exchange client on the server, but the soon to be released 2.0
version will not. It is not recommended that Outlook client be
installed on any Exchange server. It's really not that big of a deal,
since you install it, configure a profile and forget it.

I heard rumors that when CA bought Cheyenne, they lost the main
developers for the Exchange agent, and were not thoroughly testing the
sig updates prior to release. Even after speaking with the head of tech
support at Cheyenne/CA, we had no resolutions to the problems. The
current release fixes the problem with the files being left on the
drive, but there are still tons of zero byte files being left, which
could lead to a lack of disk space if left unchecked.

I would highly recommend evaluating the Scanmail product,
http://www.antivirus.com. And no, I do not work for Trend Micro!!

If you don't want to depend on one virus scanner have a look at mimesweeper.
It allows you to run as many standard virus scanners as you want/need.
It does a lot more...

We also use ScanMail and so far have been very satisfied. It scans mail as
it is passed through the server and you can also schedule a database scan
when ever you want to, or run it manually. It has nice reporting features,
and can (key word coming) automatically get new virus patterns from the
internet (though we do not use this option).

Scanmail seems to work well, installed very nicely. However, it
doesn't seem to have the capability to scan all mail passing through
the system (i.e. mail going from MSMail users out the IMS etc.)

What would be great is a virus agent that will just scan all mail
passing through the system, regardless of whether the mail is destined
for a mailbox on that server.

If anyone makes that product, we'll buy...

I believe there are products that scan your gateway. For instance, Symantec
has a package that resides on Proxy Server that scans packets passing
through the server.

The problem with all these solutions is that I don't want a separate
Internet scanner, a separate MSMail scanner, a separate Exchange
scanner etc.

I want something that can tackle the messages as they pass through the
Exchange MTA - regardless of whether they are bound for Internet,
MSMail Custom Recipient, Exchange Mailbox or any other combination.

So far nobody has such a program. They can do part, but not all.
Scanmail is nice, simple - but it won't tackle Internet mail inbound
to a custom recipient, thus it won't do a full SMTP check.

I do not know of a virus scanner that scans messages as they pass through
the MTA. I use Inoculan on my Exchange server, it scans and cleans
attachments as they are placed in the mailbox. It has all but eliminated my
virus problems in my office.

Not all mail is SMTP mail. The only product I've seen so far that is easy to
install and works is Scanmail (1.x). I'm waiting for 2.0 before actually
buying it.
I agree on Inoculan. If I'm not mistaking, NAV for Exchange only scans SMTP
mail. Someone should explain these guys that not everyone is sending SMTP
mail.

Hi, another suggestion is Panda. I have installed across the domain from
the server. It is easy and does a great job. They are releasing the NT
Server side this month. The clients are Exch. and Outlook. Since we
installed Panda has found and stopped all the virus on the net. Also it
does not cost as much as others.

All,
When looking at Anti-virus products for Exchange, it should be noted that
current products can not guarantee (check out the readme.txt of most
products and they will admit to this) that all messages will be scanned
before a client can open, thus virus infection is possible. These products
are also limited to scanning only where mailboxes actually live and not on
Exchange gateway boxes.
We are Sybari Software, Inc. are solving these and many of the concerns in
this thread. I will be releasing info and introducing the solution at the
Microsoft Exchange Conference '98 in Boston. Sept. 9-11. Our web site
(www.sybari.com) will be updated with the Exchange info on that date as
well.
Stop by the booth and check out the next generation in MS Exchange AV or
contact me with any questions you may have.

Scanmail works fine. You just have to be really careful to follow
instructions exactly on install, or it uses the wrong account and won't
start.
