Apologies if this is in the wronmg section!

I have small biz server 2003 - running exchange 03 - on Monday evening the
server developed some bad hard drive blocks right on top of my priv1.edb file
- now whenever i run a backup it is failing on "first storage group" because
"Portions of ........priv1.edb" cannot be read. Hence we have a growing .log
collection accumulating elsewhere. :(

I do have a good backup from Monday afternoon - the exchange server is up
and running at the moment - however i am fully aware we are building up for a
disaster !

I have instructions for restoring Exchange server 2003 from the good backup
- using "restore and managed media" tab in NTBackup - is this all i need to
do to get back to Monday afternoon - and then let the transaction logs bring
themself upto date. Will this replace the corrupt Priv1.edb with the one from
monday ?

Thanks in advance to anyone.

Is there a way to make exchange just re-create the priv1.edb file eg. as if
the file had been deleted and no backup were available - or is this just me
hoping for the easy fix ?

If you stop all the Exchange services, delete (or rename) the priv.edb, and
then restart Exchange, it should create a new empty one. In other words, all
the mail will be gone, but it will be working.

Hi

Thanks for the reply - i guessed this is what would happen if i deleted -
wasn't 100% sure but have a notion of that.

Unfortunately have 20 odd users so I can't do that this time, so I need to
explore how to resolve the faulty priv1.edb file and maybe somehow replace it
with the one from the backup - or restore the whole exchange server and let
the transaction logs sort out after. Having got the restore details I can go
through those or should i investigate a repair with ESEUTIL which i dont have
knowledge of using - but am willing to go off and research in order to
resolve the problem.

Honestly at this point, I would just bite the bullet and call Microsoft
Support (PSS) and see what they can do. If the email is worth more than
$250, its a solid investment.

I would figure out what is causing the corruption, e.g., hardware, and fix
it, too.
