Every time someone asks a question about the fax system that should be
included in Windows NT4 (but isn't), a sales rep replies saying "buy my
system, it only costs loads more than NT itself!" :-)

Most of us just want what Microsoft promised, and it should be virtually
free.

We want an answer from Microsoft ... WHEN ?

The 3rd-party guys are only doing what free enterprise allows them to do:
step in and fulfill a need and advertise it as much as they can.

I've got a problem with your second paragraph: Virtually _free_????? Excuse
me??? Ain't nothing worth having is free (slight over-generalization). Just
how do you think programmers get paid?

Did anyone out there consider that when you hook up a fax line that
automatically allows someone to connect to a server, without
authorization, you may have just lost that pretty C-2 level security
rating?

NT is a file server, archive server, security manager, firewall,
routing, intense piece of OS.....

(nearly) Quoting Bill Gates "If you don't know why you need NT, you
don't"

If you like playing games, want to play fax machine, or do word
processing, stick with with WFW.95 stuff... You obviously don't know
NT.

I think you're just a bit short-sighted.........
There are many of us who do know NT, happen to have it because we know what
we are doing; and by the way, really would like to have the fax service as
suggested.
Yes, you could lose all that you spoke of, but if you know what you are
doing, you won't. If you are concerned about those aspects, then don't
concern yourself with our faxing needs as we wish to provide same to our
enterprises.

Get oyour own mailbox so you don't have to mooch off your employer AND you
can put your identity on it.

No, I don't think he is.

Maybe it's Bill Gates trying to get his system running but
doesn't want to admit it to his employees.

Now, that would be a riot.

Unless of course, you're talking about me, then I agree.

Richard,

Pardon me for injecting a small comment here.

I have just re-read this thread and your three comments sound
like someone who is looking for a 'flame war'.

And I don't appreciate it. I asked the original question about
why he didn't want to give his name and whatever and place an
<grin> emoticon to signify humour. That's the way I intended
it. His response suited me.

You also commented again to have him to get a different account
and give us his name. Why?

I don't have a problem with it. This user has been on the group
for a while and gives good comments. So what's the problem.

Then your comment about someone's faxing needs that didn't meet
yours. So what?

I thought Tim Moore's question was very pertinent to this news
group and surely didn't warrant the response you gave him.

Please take this mail in the nice way it was intended.

And I am not a newsgroup monitor or an employee of Microsoft;
just a newsgroupie, who likes to help people with computer
problems.

I am posting from my personal account. A trace of the NNTP headers would
tell you who the ISP is. Doing an NSLookup at InterNIC would identify that
domain. If you called 'em, you'd find out they're not hosting any companies
large enough to be protected.

I do this on my own time, on my own dime. How I choose to do it is my
business. I prefer not to use my real name (though if you knew anything
about the internet, you would have had my real name by now, I'm not really
hiding it that well from those that know how to find it) for reasons that
would be immediately obvious.

Since I'm on my own time and my own dime, I'll do it my way. You don't have
to like it. You can just ignore every post with my name on it. That's your
choice. You might oughta re-read my .sig...

Did anyone out there consider that NT is only C2 rated *without* a
network card?
For all practical purposes, the C2 thing is a red herring.

Automated junk email is a pain, no doubt -- but putting your name and email
address in the *body* of your article is relatively "safe", as no automated
robot will be able to grab it from there.

That said, at least *I* personally give more credence to posters who are
willing to diclose their real name and company affiliation.

Ah, don't waste your breath. I think he's technically below the curve, so
he can't trust my answers unless they have a name behind them that he can
identify as carrying some weight. Since he's technically behind the curve,
he's unable to judge my answers for their relative value.

FWIW: I hold a CNE (a real one, not just on paper) and am MCSE, working on
MCSD. I've been working with NT since the beta of 3.1 and Exchange since
before Beta 1. I've probably forgotten more about Exchange than he even
suspects. But that's his problem. I'm here on my own time and my own dime,
helping folks out uncompensated.
